مایه بسی شگفتی است که خیزش اسلامگرایی افراطی، هم شیعه و هم سنی، برای بیش از 50 سال ادامه داشته و هنوز غرب اساساً خطر آن را نادیده گرفته است. در مقایسه، دولتهای غربی بسیار در مورد خطر کمونیسم روشن بودند و حتی پیش از جنگ سرد، ارزش های دموکراتیک خود را برای چالش کمونیستها در همه جهان، قویاً در کانون توجه قرار می دادند.
دلیل این تفاوت چیست؟ کشورهای غربی هراس داشتند که کمونیسم توسط جنبشهای کارگری و دانشجویی و دیگر بخشهای جمعیت خودشان انتخاب شود. در صورتیکه تقریباً همه کشورهای غربی حتی با در نظر گرفتن مهاجرت های کنونی مسلمانان، جمعیت مسلمانشان به ده درصد هم نمی رسد، و تغییر مذهب به اسلام نیز بسیار کم است.
در نبرد با کمونیسم، غرب بر ارزشهای دموکراتیک تأکید می ورزید در صورتیکه تا آنجا که اسلامگرایی مدنظر است، غرب حتی با بسیاری از گروه های اسلامگرای افراطی در کشورهای مختلف متحد شد و حرفی هم از ضدیت آنان با ارزشهای سکولار و دموکراتیک غرب به میان نیاورد.
اکنون زمان آن رسیده که درک کنیم چرا اسلامگرایی می کشد، چه در قدرت باشد (1)، چه در اپوزیسیون (2)، و این اشتباه عظیم مسامحه نیم قرن گذشته را جبران کنیم (3).

It is strange that the rise of Islamist extremism, both Shi'a and Sunni, continued for more than 50 years and yet the West basically failed to see the threat from it. In contrast, the Western states were very clear about the threat of Communism even before the Cold War and were highly focused on their own democratic values to challenge the Communists all over the world.
Why the difference? Western countries were afraid of Communism to be picked up by labor and student movements or other segments of their own population. Whereas almost all the Western countries even with the current rise of Muslim immigration cannot reach 10 percent of Muslim population, and conversion to Islam is negligible.
In the battle with Communism, the West emphasized on its own democratic values whereas as far as Islamism was concerned, the West even united with many Islamist extremist groups in various countries and hardly talked about their opposition to secular and democratic values of the West.
